Dear Incoming First Grade Parents:
Learning to read is our main goal in first grade. Many children are
emerging as readers throughout kindergarten and starting first
grade. Summer can be a time when children quite quickly lose
any skills they have learned in the school year if they do not
regularly practice good reading skills. This means that you
must read to your child EVERY night, or if they are able to
read, then they can read short books to you.
I am asking that all incoming first graders read 20 picture
books in their AR level during the summer and record them
on the attached reading log. This will be part of their first
quarter language arts grade. They will be able to take AR
quizzes on these books once school begins. We start slowly,
but by the end of first grade, the children are required to take
two AR’s a week as part of their language arts grade. AR lists
are available at
www.queenofheavennm.com under the library
tab by title and by level. I tested your students a couple weeks
ago and their AR level will be on the top page of their jump up
day packet.
I look forward to reading with your children next school year!
Ms. Talbert
