Summer 2010 4th Grade Reading Requirements and Supply List

Dear Future Fourth Grade Parents:

All teachers feel somewhat frustrated by how much reading skills can decline over the summer. For that reason, Queen of Heaven has summer reading requirements. The requirements for incoming Fourth Graders are the following:

1.                  The Summer Reading Log (available in the school office, or simply write title, author, AR level, date completed, number of pages read, and parent initials). Complete the reading log and turn it in the first day of school. I encourage one hour of daily reading. This is the amount of time required for reading growth. Twenty minutes daily is the bare minimum for maintenance. The reading log needs to reflect at least 3 chapter books read, which should be no lower than a 3.4 reading level.

2.                  Every student is required to take 2 Accelerated Reading quizzes within his or her reading level (ZPD range) during the first week of school. (Results of current STAR testing will be included with report cards. If the student’s reading level is unknown, the books read should be relatively easy.) The books need to be chapter books worth at least one point. These quizzes are for books read during the summer. To make books read easier to remember, students should make notes of the books, such as a list of the characters, the main conflict in the story, and a sentence to summarize each chapter or two. These notes MAY be used while taking the AR quiz.

The Accelerated Reading List is available on the school website at www.queenofheavennm.com. Please click on the heading “students” on the left side of the home page. Then, you will find a prompt indicating AR Quiz List by Book Level.

These requirements constitute the first three reading grades of the 2010-2011 school year.

The summer reading program at the Bernalillo County libraries is excellent, with lots of prizes! In addition, there are usually performers such as musicians, storytellers, and magicians at the public libraries throughout the summer.

I wish every Fourth Grader and their families a fun, healthy, safe summer with lots of reading.
