PARENT NOTES
I would love a parent volunteer to help me look up and label three boxes of donated books for our classroom.
ACCELERATED READING PROGRAM: Your children should be checking books out from the Queen of Heaven library in their AR level, reading AR books from home or going to the public library. The children have all been tested and have their new AR levels written in their homework folders. The goal is one AR book per week. SOME CHILDREN ARE ALREADY BEHIND!

LIBRARY
We will have library this year on Tuesday from 9:00 am until 10:00 am. All library books must be turned into the librarian by 8:30 Tuesday mornings, so PLEASE make sure your child has his/her library books in his/her backpack on Tuesday morning. If they are missing one or both, they do not get to check out books for that week and it is hard to keep up with their AR goal.
READING LOGS are passed out on Friday and collected on Fridays. PLEASE read to/with your kids and fill out the log with your child. This is also part of their reading grade. They must read 7 books a week to get full credit for that week.

CLASS NOTES
Each week we will have a spotlight kid of the week. Your child will bring home a poster to be filled out with pictures, etc. On Friday of that week, your child will be Author's Chair. They should bring a short book that they have practiced reading and they will read to the class after lunch during Read Aloud time (12:25). Family members are welcome to come and listen to their child.
Awesome Mass listeners are celebrated in my classroom. When the children answer Father Johnny's questions in church correctly, they get to pick from the treasure chest on Friday.
As a classroom service project, we collect POP TOPS from soda pop cans all year. Our goal is to fill at least three large tubs with pop tops. At the end of the year, we take them to the Ronald McDonald House to help children with cancer. Please remember us when you are having a soda or other beverage and save your pop tops!!
OVERALL CLASSROOM THEME
Every few weeks or so, the theme in our classroom will change. Most of the year, they are science based. If you have any books, movies etc. that pertain to our theme, the children are welcome to bring them to school to share them with the class. Please only send movies that are only about 30 minutes long. The theme for September is our body and our health.

Writing Center: Students will be starting the writing center this week.
Magnetic Wall Center: Students use magnetic letters to work on the phonics letter of the week.

Pocket Chart Center: Students create sentences by using punctuation, noun, and verb clues.
Guided Reading Center: Students will read with the teacher in small groups of 3 or 4.

COMMITTEE WORK
We will have committees several times a week. This is small group work that pertains to the classroom theme and integrates all subject matter so the children can learn hands-on in a context that they understand.
Language Arts: food acrostics
Math: bar graph favorite food
Science: create bulletin board with food pyramid
Social Studies: categorize favorite foods of group in pyramid
HOMEWORK PACKET
A packet will be sent home on Monday and due on Friday. I will not take late homework. Any work not turned in on Friday morning will result in a zero. This helps the students learn responsibility for their work. The ONLY exception is illness.
SCHOOL NOTES
There will be a pep rally today at 2 pm followed by a dedication for our new playground outside. All parents are welcome to attend!
If you have any questions or concerns, please e-mail me or make an appointment for after school so that we can discuss it.
